On 20 May 2014 in Brussels, a high-level event hosted by European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs launched Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance’s replenishment.

The meeting in Brussels framed the tremendous opportunity for Gavi partners to support countries in consolidating the gains achieved and accelerating progress post-2015, and marked the start of the donor pledging process for Gavi's replenishment for the 2016-2020 period.

Since 2000, with support from donors and strong commitment from countries, Gavi has helped to immunise an additional 440 million children, which will save 6 million lives. We need to build upon this momentum as 1.5 million children under five still die every year from vaccine-preventable diseases in the world’s poorest countries. We stand at a critical moment in time where we can dramatically accelerate progress achieved against the leading killers of children and women.

Potential

With bold new commitments from donors, implementing countries, vaccine manufacturers and the private sector, coupled with the power of immunisation, Gavi has the potential to reach one billion children by the early 2020s, nearly double the number of lives saved since the Vaccine Alliance was founded, and unlock over 100 billion dollars in economic benefits through health care savings and productivity gains. The meeting was attended by high-level representatives from Vaccine Alliance partners, including senior government officials from donor and implementing countries.
