At a high-level event held during the UN General Assembly, the US and UK governments recognised GAVI as “an effective model” to achieving the Millennium Development Goals. 

Selected by an independent committee for its innovative public-private approach, GAVI was the only organisation among seven countries to be featured at the event.

  • The event moderator, British television presenter and journalist Femi Oke, said that although the MDGs are far from being fully achieved, significant progress has been made.
  • UK Secretary of State for International Development Andrew Mitchell said, “The GAVI Alliance is making a real difference. It shows that through innovations, we can deliver inspirational changes to people’s lives.”
  • “Investments in immunisation yield a rate of return that is higher than nearly any other development intervention,” said USAID Administrator Raj Shah.
  • Former President of Ireland and human rights activist Mary Robinson and Archbishop Desmond Tutu discussed the need for developing countries and the international community to speed up efforts to fully achieve the MDGs by the 2015 deadline.
  • “Innovation and partnership will remain critical in GAVI’s ambition to immunise another quarter billion children by 2015,” said GAVI CEO, Seth Berkley.
