Geneva, 31 May 2019 - Grassroots advocates and world leaders will gather in Vancouver, Canada, from 3-6 June for the Women Deliver conference to explore solutions to achieve a more gender equal world under the theme “Power. Progress. Change.”
The conference presents a unique opportunity for the global community to convene, share new ideas and accelerate momentum to empower women, girls and adolescents worldwide. Immunisation is a gender-equal intervention that ensures the health and prosperity of men and women alike. In 2017, around 85% of infants (116.2 million) worldwide were immunised - with no significant difference in global coverage between boys and girls.
This progress is driven in part by Gavi’s Alliance partners who work in low income countries to ensure equitable access to immunisation. Together, we support countries to overcome gender-related barriers to immunisation, including provision of vaccines that specifically benefit girls and women. These include the combined measles-rubella vaccine which can protect girls and women against the risk of miscarriage, and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine which can prevent up to 90% of cervical cancer cases. Additionally, HPV vaccine is an opportunity to strengthen health systems to reach adolescent girls with integrated health services for transformative benefits for them and their communities.
By integrating broader health services with strong routine immunisation coverage, countries can reach more people and move closer to the realisation of universal health coverage and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
