Phnom Penh, 19 November 2013 – GAVI Alliance partners are gathering in Cambodia this week for a keynote Board meeting that will determine which new vaccines will be added to the organisation’s portfolio of support.
Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Sen will open the two-day GAVI Alliance Board meeting (21-22 November), which brings together representatives from donor and developing countries, civil society organisations, vaccine manufacturers, and other stakeholders in global immunisation.
South Asia
This will be the first major GAVI Alliance event held in South Asia since its Partners’ Forum in 2009, which took place in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Since 2007, Asian countries including Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam have protected more than 25 million children against potentially fatal illnesses by introducing the five-in-one pentavalent and measles vaccines with GAVI support.
Last month, the measles vaccine was replaced with the two-in-one measles-rubella (MR) vaccine. Cambodia’s health ministry has also taken steps to ensure that every child, particularly the hardest to reach, will be vaccinated in every village, commune and district.
