One year after the University of Rwanda launched Africa’s first course on health supply chain management, the LOGIVAC+ Center in Benin has also started offering specialist training for vaccine cold chain managers.
Twenty students from Benin, the Gambia and Togo have enrolled in the Strategic Training Executive Programme at Ouidah’s LOGIVAC+ Centre. The Centre was set up last year by Agence Medicale Preventative (AMP), with the support of WHO and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Benin’s STEP course will follow the same learning experience introduced in October 2015 at Rwanda University’s East African Community (EAC) Regional Centre of Excellence for Vaccines, Immunisation and Health Supply Chain Management. In addition to a traditional classroom experience, course participants will be paired up with mentors from global logistics company United Parcel Service (UPS).
UPS, a private sector parter of Gavi, has crafted a training programme designed to foster regional expertise in health supply chain management. Topics include data, logistics, problem-solving skills and team-building.
By the end of 2020, Gavi and its partners expect some 100 immunisation supply chain leaders to graduate from STEP programmes across both Africa and Asia.
